Rudy Waldroop was born April 8, 1950, in Hemit, California to Walter Glen and Annemie (Popp) Waldroop. He passed away Thursday, December 17, 2009, in Oklahoma City at the age of 59 years 8 months and 9 days. Rudy lost a 7 year battle to liver failure while awaiting a transplant.
Services were Monday, December 21, 2009, at the South College Church of Christ under the care of Green Country Funeral Home. Officiating was the Minister David Deffenbaugh, Serving as pall bearers were Shannon, Micah, Dakota, and Chilsolm Waldroop, Sam Yaws, and David Tharp. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Rod Wyers, Boy Scout Troop 743, Zane Smith, and Covey Smith. A private interment followed at the Pumpkin Center Cemtery.
Rudy attended Southwestern State in Durant from 1968 to 1972. In 1976 he and Wista Smith were married in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Rudy was a scrimshaw artist (doing etchings in ivory) for over 27 years until his health necessitated his retirement. His work was featured in fine art shows and was prized by collectors nationwide due to his attention to fine detail. He did all his art freehand and used only pre-historic ivory.
Rudy was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts of America and was recently awarded his 30 year pin. He was the founder and Scoutmaster of Briggs Pack 612 and leader of Troop 743 in Tahlequah. Rudy was also a member of the BSA Eagle Board.
Above all Rudy valued his faith and family. He was led to the Lord after meeting Wista and her family. He remained a faithful member of the South College Church of Christ where he served on the missions committee.
Rudy is survived by his wife, Wista of the home; four sons, Shannon and wife Kara of Tulsa, Micah and wife Lisa of Broken Arrow, Dakota and wife Tanya of Talihina, and Chisholm of Tahlequah; two grandchildren Robyn and Raena; parents Glenn and Annemie Waldroop of Okmulgee; a sister, Ingrid Cline and husband Ray also of Okmulgee; and many friends and loved ones.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Rudy’s name to Burnt Cabin Christian Camp at South College Church of Christ, Tahlequah. Wista and her family wish to express their appreciation for the staff of OKC Baptist Integris ICU for the care provided Rudy during this time.
