Harvey Gunnar Benson Jr. Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Harvey Gunnar Benson Jr. passed away on May 15, 2022 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma at the age of seventy-nine. He was born January 15, 1943 in Jefferson City, Missouri to Hazel Louise and Harvey Gunnar Benson Sr. He spent his formative years in Sidney, Montana and graduated high school in Roseville, CA in 1961. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy later that same year and retired thirty years later as a Machinist Mate Command Master Chief. He married the love of his life, Heloise "Bobbi" Ann Roberts in 1965 and they were blessed with two children, Stephanie Marie O'Connor and Donald Scott Benson. After retirement, he went back to college and became a Civil Engineer Technician. He came to know Jesus as his personal savior in 2001, when his then seven-year-old grandson, Gage, called his grandparents to tell them it was very important that they go to church because he wanted to make sure they would be in heaven someday. He made a promise to his grandson and he kept that promise. He studied the Word of God and gained an in-depth knowledge of scripture with much credit going to his pastor, friend and mentor in Washington state, Lincoln Loney. He had many interests. He was proud of his Swedish heritage. He loved telling stories about his time in the Navy, in particular his experiences aboard submarines. He had diverse taste in music and was a talented drummer who played in the school band, then later in a band called "Rebel Cause" and on his church worship team in his later years. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, reading, history, watching westerns, had a deep understanding of politics, was excellent helping his grandson, Colin, with his math homework and patiently watched Disney's "Jungle Book" on repeat with his grandson, Daniel, because he loved the soundtrack. He loved conversations with his grandsons, Colin, Zack, Daniel, Gage, Gunnar and Stone and he loved to charm his granddaughters, Marissa and Hannah. His great grandkids, Ophelia and Torryn never failed to make him smile. He had many qualities we admired. He was smart, witty, modeled a strong work ethic, was generous to his loved ones, gave excellent advice and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family. His kids, grandkids and great grandkids brought him great joy and pride. During his last days, he let us know that the laughter around him made him happy. He is predeceased by his parents, Hazel Louise and Harvey Gunnar Benson Sr. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Heloise "Bobbi" Ann Benson, daughter, Stephanie Marie O'Connor, son, Donald Scott Benson and wife, Tracy Kay Benson, grandchildren, Colin James O'Connor, Zachary Scott Benson, Daniel Dietrich O'Connor, Gage Kristian Benson and wife, Marissa LaDean Benson, Gunnar Ford Benson and wife, Hannah Nichole Benson, Stone David Brewer and his great granddaughter, Ophelia Rain Benson and great grandson, Torryn Kade Benson. He also leaves behind his older sister, Sonja Jean Barber and husband, Bill and younger sister, Betty Louise Conkling and husband, Alan as well as numerous other friends and family who will miss him dearly.
